Course Description

Math 110 – Critical Thinking, Finance, Logic, & Probability (3 credits)

This course encompasses four main topics, each explored through a biblical lens using practical, real-world examples:
– Critical Thinking: Including logical argumentation, fallacies, and biblical analysis.
– Finance: Focusing on biblical financial principles and practical money matters, including budgeting, saving, spending, taxes, investment strategies, debt management, and charitable giving.
– Logic: Covering logical analysis history, techniques, and notation.
– Probability: Delving into practical and Bayesian probability.
Students are expected to complete weekly assignments and undertake special projects such as the logical examination of Scripture and the creation of a personal budget. Further evaluation will be gained from weekly quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam.

Required Materials:

  • Bible (unless otherwise specified, you may use the translation of your choice)
    • Lecture notes and quiz blanks will use the ESV translation.
  • Lecture slides and optional additional resources will serve as the main teaching materials for this course

Instructors

Daniel ManwillerMath 110 Instructor – (Critical Thinking, Finance, & Logic Sections)

Daniel Manwiller, along with his wonderful wife Elisabeth, serves in various administrative and academic roles at Anchor Bible College. Daniel earned his bachelor’s in electrical engineering and his master’s in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Michigan. He currently works in an engineering role and serves in various ministry roles at Hope Community Church. Additionally, he is pursuing a master’s in biblical studies from Moody Theological Seminary

Dan TaylorMath 110 Instructor – (Probability Section)

Dan Taylor grew up in Northern Michigan. He played baseball at Grand Rapids Community College and later attended Eastern Michigan University where he studied mathematics and physics, ultimately earning a master’s degree in mathematics. Dan has spent over ten years in industry focused on artificial intelligence applications within autonomous vehicles and medicine. He also serves as a Sunday School teacher and home Bible study shepherd. In addition to Dan’s board member role at Anchor, he has served as an adjunct instructor following the completion of his master’s degree in biblical studies from Moody Theological Seminary in the Fall of 2024. Dan and his wife have lived in metro-Detroit for over 15 years and have six children.
