Course Description

Theology 210 – Creeds, Councils, and Confessions (3 credits)

This course follows the church’s confession of Christ “to the ends of the earth” as foretold in the book of Acts. Beginning with early church fathers, weaving through church councils, following historical-theological movements, and ending with modern evangelical affirmations, each section of this course is paired with a primary-source theologian. Week one introduces a “Historical Catechism” that students memorize in segments. Weekly guided readings prepare for classroom engagement with Athanasius, Augustine, Anselm, Luther, Calvin, Edwards, and Machen. Coursework consists of guided readings, quizzes, and a cumulative final exam. By the end, students should be able to articulate how creeds relate to Scripture and guard against heresy, how councils and leading theologians formulated doctrine in light of biblical revelation and historical developments, and how confessions can foster true unity in Christ’s church–all with an eye towards God’s glory and faithful ministry today.

Instructor

Bob SnyderTheology 210 Instructor

Originally from Minnesota, Bob Snyder is happily married to Jinna. Together they are blessed with six children and a growing number of grandchildren. His education includes degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics from North Dakota State University, an M.Div. from Central Seminary in Minneapolis, and a Ph.D. in church history from Southern Seminary in Louisville. Although he felt a desire for ministry early in life and professed faith as a child, it is likely that he was born again in his mid-20s through a crisis of faith that started humbling his pride. He has had the privilege of serving over twenty years in the pastorate, both as a solo pastor and as an associate pastor. Currently, he is an Associate Pastor at Countryside Bible Church in Jonesville, Michigan and the director of Spring Branch Academy.
